Section 1

You will hear a conversation between a museum volunteer coordinator and a new volunteer during an induction session. Answer Questions 1–8.
Coordinator: Good morning, and welcome to the Riverside City Museum. I'm Helen, the volunteer coordinator. You must be our new volunteer.
Volunteer: Yes, that's right. My name's Daniel Foster.
Coordinator: Lovely to meet you, Daniel. Let me just take down a few details before we start the tour. Could I check the spelling of your surname?
Volunteer: Of course. It's F-O-S-T-E-R.
Coordinator: Thank you. And which days were you hoping to volunteer?
Volunteer: I was thinking weekends, but actually Tuesday would suit me better with my studies.
Coordinator: Tuesday is perfect. We're always short of help midweek. The shift runs from nine until one, so that's four hours.
Volunteer: That sounds fine. What sort of tasks would I be doing?
Coordinator: Most new volunteers begin in the information desk area, helping visitors find their way around. After a few weeks, if you're comfortable, you could move to giving short tours of the gallery.
Volunteer: I'd really enjoy that. I studied history at college.
Coordinator: Excellent. Now, a few practical points. You'll need to wear the official badge at all times, and we provide a blue shirt with the museum logo. Please don't wear open shoes for safety reasons.
Volunteer: Right, no sandals. What about lunch?
Coordinator: There's a staff room on the second floor where you can eat. Tea and coffee are free, but you bring your own food. The room has a microwave and a fridge.
Volunteer: Good to know. Is there anywhere to leave my bag?
Coordinator: Yes, every volunteer gets a locker. You'll need a one-pound coin to use it, which you get back afterwards.
Volunteer: I'll remember that. And how do I get in early in the morning?
Coordinator: Use the side entrance on Mill Street, not the main doors. The security guard will let you in if you show your badge.
Volunteer: Perfect. One more thing — is there any training before I start?
Coordinator: Yes, there's a short online course you complete at home. It takes about two hours and covers health and safety. You should finish it before your first shift.
Volunteer: I'll do that this week. When does my first shift begin?
Coordinator: Let's say the fourteenth of March. Does that work?
Volunteer: Yes, that's great.
Coordinator: Wonderful. I'll email you a confirmation and the link to the course. Welcome aboard, Daniel.
