Across the world, hundreds of minority languages are vanishing as their last speakers grow old. While some people feel that public funds should be devoted to saving these tongues, others view this as an unnecessary expense, arguing that linguistic decline is a natural process. In my opinion, although resources are limited, governments are justified in supporting endangered languages because of their cultural and intellectual value. Those who oppose state-funded preservation make several reasonable points. They argue that public money is scarce and should be directed towards pressing concerns such as healthcare, housing and education. Furthermore, they claim that languages have always emerged and faded throughout history, and that forcing the survival of a tongue with only a handful of speakers achieves little practical benefit. From this perspective, allowing communities to adopt widely spoken languages may even improve their access to jobs and global opportunities. However, I find the arguments for protection more persuasive. Each language embodies a unique way of understanding the world, carrying traditional knowledge about medicine, nature and history that disappears once the language dies. When the Welsh and Maori languages were revived through schools, broadcasting and government funding, entire communities regained a sense of identity and pride. Such initiatives also demonstrate that modest investment can produce lasting cultural and social returns. In conclusion, while there are valid concerns about cost and natural change, I believe that governments should fund the protection of endangered languages. The loss of any language represents an irreplaceable loss of human heritage, and targeted, sensible spending can keep these voices alive for future generations.
